THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Stop by The Woodlands Children’s Museum to help honor the brave men and women who serve in the military.

The museum honors those in active service May 21

On Saturday, May 21, children are invited to create a card expressing their gratitude to the troops, which will be sent to those in active duty along with donated items of beef jerky, flavored single drink mixes, energy bars and baby wipes the museum will be collecting during the weekend.

“We are so thankful for the dedication of our troops and feel that it is the small things that can make a difference for them,” Angela Colton, executive director of the museum, said. “Armed Forces Day gives our community an opportunity to band together and recognize the sacrifices and endurance of these courageous and hard-working individuals.”

Active military and their immediate families are always admitted to The Woodlands Children’s Museum without charge – thanks to a collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense, through the Blue Star Museums program.

The national program runs annually from Memorial Day to Labor Day – but The Woodlands Children’s Museum continues offering free admission to service members and their families throughout the year.

“We also give the service members’ families membership privileges, including discounted prices on classes and birthday parties,” Colton said.

She explained that the museum does not receive funding from the Blue Star Museums program and that participation is purely voluntary. Any museum may participate – and so far, 2,000 organizations around the country have joined the program. The Woodlands Children’s Museum is one of 12 Houston-area museums that is a part of this collaboration.

“Being a Blue Star Museum allows military families to participate in all of the educational exhibits, events and resources that The Woodlands Children’s Museum has to offer,” Colton said.

Blue Star Museums provide free admittance to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card and includes active duty members of the U.S. military – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, as well as members of the National Guard and Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and NOAA Commissioned Corps – and up to five family members.

Located at 4775 W. Panther Creek Drive, Suite 280, in The Woodlands, 77381, the museum has a full calendar of exciting activities. To learn more about the museum, its hours of operation and ways to donate to the nonprofit, visit woodlandschildrensmuseum.org or call 281-465-0955.
