THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- There’s a whole new option in town for childcare.

Children’s Lighthouse recently opened at 2183 Woodforest Parkway West in Montgomery — and is now accepting students ages 6 weeks to 12 years.

The grand opening for the center is slated for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 3. A number of fun activities are planned for families. Children attending with their parents will enjoy a bounce house and ice cream from Marble Slab.

The Children’s Lighthouse franchise was originally established in 1997 in Fort Worth by brothers Pat and Mike Brown, who both wanted to provide a more educational form of early childhood and afterschool programs to families.

The brothers’ dedication to innovation, family and transparency led to a sought-after school system, which has now expanded to more than 40 locations nationwide with two dozen more on the way.

Children’s Lighthouse holds a Franchise 500 designation by Entrepreneur magazine and can be found in eight states.

The Woodforest location will be the 13th for the company in the Houston area and offers infant care, preschool programs, kindergarten and lesson plans for school-age children.

The center’s director Carlen Kossman explained that Children’s Lighthouse uses a nationally accredited, proprietary curriculum and programs that target each specific age group.

“It’s not just a curriculum-based school, though,” she added. “We’re trying to develop as a whole – and give them the space to move at their own pace.”

Kossman said the school’s goal is to prepare young children for success – as students and as community members.

For example, children recently learned about kindness and giving, Kossman said. “We want them to learn about and develop their compassion – not only for their classmates but also for their neighbors.”

She explained that Children's Lighthouse follows the Reggio Emilia project-based learning approach, which relies on nurturing creativity and critical thinking daily.

The goal is to provide a number of opportunities for children to create and explore – so they can discover what their interests are and what truly excites them.

To help maintain the high standards of the center, Kossman said management and teachers enroll in ongoing training.

“They go through about multiple different training programs – from first aid to food handling,” she said. “We want to have the best people for our kids. They genuinely care about your little ones.”

Parents enjoy the center’s early and late hours that allow for flexibility with their work schedules, as well as the Internet video monitoring that provides constant connection in the security-controlled building.

Kossman said the safe environment and top-notch staff attracted her as a parent as well – and she enrolled her 3-year-old son in the program.

She encourages interested parents to schedule a tour so they can check out the brand new center.

“We want to make sure the school is the best possible fit for you and your child,” she said. “Our goal is to make it a home away from home.”

The school has 10 classrooms and, according to Kossman, the best play area around, complete with a putt putt course, splash pad and a basketball court.

Virgil Yoakum, general manager of Woodforest, said Children’s Lighthouse is the second childcare center to open in the development.

“Our community is steadily growing, with more and more people settling here every day,” he said. “We have an elementary school on site – and now we have both Children’s Lighthouse and Kiddie Academy offering preschool and afterschool care. We want our families to have the best options for their children, and this award-winning program is sure to become a hit in the community.”

Children’s Lighthouse is the newest addition to Woodforest’s growing number of resident conveniences, which include a CVS Pharmacy and the Church at Woodforest.
