MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- The 2017 hurricane season has officially come to an end, but some Montgomery County residents will feel the effects of Hurricane Harvey for years to come.

"Rental property is scarce, FEMA assistance is ending, and we still have families that can't go home," said Cynthia Jamieson, public information officer for the Montgomery County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Hurricane Harvey Fast Facts

  • Montgomery County received up to 33 inches of rain in a period of 4-5 days.
  • All rivers and watersheds crested at major flood stage. Many rivers broke records set in 1994.
  • 5,971 individuals were evacuated from homes, and first responders performed over 241 rescues.
  • At the height of the storm, Montgomery County's 13 shelters housed roughly 3,500 people.
  • Approximately 1,500 people needed long-term sheltering.
  • Montgomery County had to close more than 300 roads due to flooding, including major thoroughfares SH242, SH105, US59 and I-45.
  • More than 300 homes in Creekside Park (Harris County) flooded.

"Throughout Hurricane Harvey and the aftermath, there were more than 10,000 volunteers just in Montgomery County," Jamieson said. "Our community really stood up and came together in a way that still makes many people proud to have been a part of the operation."

Jamieson reminds the community that another hurricane season is just around the corner.

"Now is a perfect time to look back at the things that you didn't have, that you wish you would have had," Jamieson said. "Make sure you build out your disaster kit -- one for shelter-in-place, and a 'go kit' in the event of evacuation. This hurricane was different, because we didn't deal with huge power losses, but don't forget what Hurricane Ike felt and looked like. Utilize both of these experiences and prepare for any kind of disaster that might come our way."
