THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The John Cooper School Varsity Baseball 2019 Mid-Season Review

Comments from Coach Mike Williams

Not many coaches get the opportunity to coach six D1 players and two D3 players in private school baseball. This team is probably one of the closest bunch of kids that I ever been around. We are returning nine starters from last year’s team and we are looking to make another run in the SPC.–Coach Mike Williams

Goals This season, the team looks to improve upon last year’s 23-14 overall and 4-2 finish in SPC South Zone.

Team This year’s team will have 10 seniors all of which have lettered for us. Six returning seniors and their fall 2019 commitment colleges are Evan Minarovic (Northwestern University), Reed Smith (Northwestern University), Evan Godwin (Baylor University), Logan Leax (George Washington University), Braden Sebesta (Carleton University), Jonathan Spangler-Sakata (Johns Hopkins University). Seniors also returning are Ben Braun, Will McNeill, Jacob Gunter and Matt Krehbiel. Also returning are four juniors Tyler Douglas Davidson, Clark Douglas, Jacob Hayley, Antonio Pastrana and newcomer Callum Burton. Dragons will also have returning sophomore Jacob Rebrook (Pepperdine early commit) and newcomer Jacob Peterson. Last but not least, Dragons will also be adding freshman pitcher Blake Pitts to the upcoming roster.

Offensively the Dragons will be led by Logan Leax (CF) Evan Minarovic (SS) and Evan Godwin (P). Leax hit a team high .434 last year with 35 runs scored and 34 RBIS. Minarovic hit .319 with 2HR and 33 Runs scored. Godwin who hit .315 with team high 4 HR and team high in RBIS at 39.

Pitching this year is led by Reed Smith who was second on the team in ERA at 1.18 in 54 IP. Also helping out this year will be Evan Godwin who is looking to build on his late push to the rotation from last season. Dragons also return Braden Sebesta, who led the team in IP at 55 to help close out the games this year.

Coaching Staff The team is coached by Mike Williams, who enters his first season at the helm of the Dragons. Steve Hon returns for his 16th season as varsity assistant coach. Dragons have added two new coaches to Williams staff, Adam Riggs as the hitting coach and Pat Primavera as the defensive coach.

Conference Play The team will participate in the Southwest Preparatory Conferene (SPC) South Zone this year with six other teams from Houston and Austin. The usually tough Houston teams of Episcopal (13-time SPC champion), Kinkaid (four-time SPC champion), Houston Christian (2014 SPC Champion), and St. Johns (two-time SPC champ) will be good again this year. Austin St. Andrews looks to improve this year along with Austin St. Stephens who are always well coached.

2018 Team Accomplishments
SPC Record of 4-2
SPC Finish: 3rd Place
SPC 2-1 in SPC Playoffs championship tournament
