THE WOODLANDS, TX – Former home to the Shell open, now know as the Houston Open, The Woodlands Country Club hosted the Insperity Invitational this past week and weekend. This tournament is part of the PGA Tour Champions and was introduced to the circuit in 2004. Augusta Pines, located in Spring, was the home to this tour for 4 years and then moved to the Pro Tournament course in The Woodlands Country Club’s private 63-hole complex.

Annual Woodlands Golf Tournament saw Steven Alker edge out Steve Stricker in a battle of the titans.

With more than two million dollars in the purse, pro golfers from across the nation and overseas flocked into The Woodlands last week to compete for a top spot in the tournament. One of these golf legends was Fred Couples. With over 60 wins in the professional circuit, and a former world no. 1, he was determined to reach the leader board and a tournament favorite.

Canadian Mike Weir, winner of the 2021 Insperity Invitational, also made an appearance in hopes of returning to the leader box. With many tournament wins under his belt, he was hopeful to make headway toward the top with other pros.

With almost half a year without competing in a golf tournament, Steve Stricker picked up his sticks and made a run for the top. Leading the way in the first round of the Insperity Tournament along with Steven Alker. After 36 holes, Alker and Stricker found themselves tied for the lead.

Sunday was the day to make or break for 1st place. Stricker fought his way through each hole but unfortunately due to weather, the tournament was delayed. Alker took advantage of this, grabbed his sticks and regrouped to play the final holes.

Stricker couldn’t connect on a couple of holes and Alker pulled away in the final moments. Alker walked away with the Insperity purse of over $300,000. This would bring his total career earnings over 2 million dollars.

With 14 professional wins under his belt, Alker would add the 2022 Insperity Invitational champion notch as well. The 50-year-old professional from New Zealand fought hard through the tough course as well as mother nature to win the top spot.
