Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital Earns Prestigious Magnet® Recognition

THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital (HMTW) has earned their first Magnet® Designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Magnet Designation serves as the gold standard for nursing excellence and is the most prestigious nursing achievement an organization can accomplish. Less than 10% of hospitals in the United States, just over 600 hospitals, have earned this recognition.

Designation is only achieved through a supportive culture of teamwork, nursing professionalism and superior patient outcomes. Patients can trust when they see the Magnet Designation associated with HMTW that there is a high-caliber team of nursing professionals providing unparalleled care to all.

In order to achieve Magnet Designation, the organization must complete several milestones: a review of written documentation including staff and patient satisfaction, quality data, and a three-day on-site visit. ANCC appraisers spoke with staff nurses, board members, patient and family advisory councils, community stakeholders, physician partners and many other interdisciplinary groups during the on-site visit. ANCC appraisers were extremely complimentary of the excellent nursing culture formed at HMTW in such a short time period since the hospital opened in 2017, as well as the innovation and technology available for patients and nurses. From the design of the hospital to the way that nurses utilize each feature all reflected their dedication to better patient outcomes.

Other benefits of Magnet organizations include attracting and retaining top talent; advancing nursing and interprofessional standards and practices; and fostering a collaborative culture. The credentialing process also evaluates a number of factors related to nursing, including the quality of nursing leadership; coordination and collaboration across specialties; and processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care.

Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:

• Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.

• Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates.

• Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
