THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The march through district play continues for the volleyball teams of 13-6A, with only a few matches separating the headliners and the middle of the pack.

Grand Oaks vs. The Woodlands

9/5/23

The Lady Grizzlies opened their week with a tough matchup against the Woodlands on Tuesday with the Highlander crowd very much against them.

A scrappy first set would see Grand Oaks win by six after two timeouts from the Lady Highlanders failed to stop their momentum that carried into the following sets. A five-point and eight-point win in the second and third sets, respectively, pushed Grand Oaks into a victory in straight sets.

The win also continued the Lady Grizzlies’ streak of straight victories to four in district play.

Conroe vs. Oak Ridge

9/5/23

In what would end up being the closest game of the week, the Lady War Eagles and Lady Tigers would face off to creep closer to the top of the district.

The teams traded sets the entire match. Conroe opened with a victory, followed by an Oak Ridge victory, and so on until the fifth and final set. Neither team had won a set by more than six points, but that would change in the fifth. A surge of offense and steady hitting from their front line would steer the Lady War Eagles to a 15-6 win that secured the match.

Cleveland vs. Willis

9/5/23

Still searching for their first district win, the Cleveland Lady Indians traveled to face the Ladykats of Willis.

The going would be tough for Cleveland, with Willis’ unrelenting hitting pushing them to a first-set victory of 25-17. That first set would be the closest the match got as Willis mounted scoring run after scoring run to win in straight sets for the first time this season.

College Park vs. Caney Creek

9/5/23

With the hopes of reaching second place in the district, College Park made its way to Caney Creek, where they would assert themselves on their opponents.

Dominant displays in the first and second sets that saw College Park give up a combined 15 points allowed them to cruise down the stretch. A 14-point victory in the third set brought home a defining win that set the Lady Cavs as one of the toughest teams in the district.

Willis vs. College Park

9/8/23

The Lady Cavs were rewarded for their win by getting to host the Ladykats, with their shot at second place in the district hanging in the balance.

Continuing their dominance from Tuesday, College Park burst out to a six-point win in the first set before brutalizing Willis in the second with a stunning 19-point win to go up 2-0. Like they had done all season, Willis refused to stay down with a come-from-behind third-set win to push the match to four. College Park would regain its composure and finish strong to win the match after only dropping one set.

New Caney vs. Conroe

9/8/23

After an agonizing defeat in five to the Lady War Eagles, Conroe hosted New Caney in a bid to bounce back.

The Lady Tigers came out in full force, winning the opening set by 10 points. The Lady Eagles would never find their footing as their first set proved to be their best offering. Conroe continued to ride runs to massive leads that saw them complete the sweep in straight sets and rebound to end the week at 1-1.

Oak Ridge vs. Grand Oaks

9/8/23

In this season’s first edition of the Battle of the Oaks, the Lady Grizzlies were set to host and used their talent to their full advantage.

For the fifth straight district match, Grand Oaks swept their opponents with ruthless efficiency. Oak Ridge refused to quit down the stretch with a third-set loss that came within six points of tying, but the effort still fell short.

The win sets Grand Oaks firmly at the top of the district, with each team hoping to catch the Lady Grizzlies on their off night.

The Woodlands vs. Cleveland

9/8/23

Cleveland hosted the Woodlands in the last game of the week, still looking for their first win of the season.

The Lady Highlanders would not provide Cleveland with said win as the Woodlands came out firing on all cylinders. While winning every set, the Lady Highlanders only gave up 26 points throughout the entire match. The Lady Highlanders exited their dazzling display with a 3-0 sweep that secured them second place in the district, just edging out the Lady Cavs.
