Lone Star College-Houston North launches eSports program

HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College-Houston North Fallbrook recently began its eSports Management track, a level II certificate under the Business Administration Program AAS degree, for students interested in seeking a career in the virtual entertainment field.

“Lone Star College Houston North Fallbrook realized eSports is no longer a hobby. It is one of the newest and fastest-growing career fields,” said Jarvis Goodman, LSC-Houston North Fallbrook eSports assistant professor. “Students will learn about the eSports field and the concepts it takes to seek a career on the business (marketing and management) side.”

eSports (electronic sports) is a billion-dollar industry for competitive and organized multiplayer video gaming. When classes are not in session, LSC-Houston North Fallbrook opens the classroom as an eSports Lounge for all students, regardless of their program of study, to hang out and decompress from stress. The safe space fosters student engagement by attracting students from various backgrounds with a common desire for gaming.

“The eSports Lounge has helped me to gain friends that I have wanted since high school and improve my personal and educational goals,” said David Contreras, LSC-Houston North Fallbrook student. “This space is making me feel so much better mentally. I am now more motivated to stay on campus after my classes to connect with students and make new friends, who I hope to stay in contact with through graduation and into the workforce.”

The eSports Management track at LSC-Houston North Fallbrook introduces students to the role of management in the eSports industry. They will learn various planning components for an event, regulation points for the field, general event products and wellness, and participate in an internal internship. “Interested students should have a love for video games and a drive and passion for sports management,” said Goodman. “Students will learn how to sell products and games, so they will rely on their passion to properly articulate it to their consumers.”

LSC Houston North became the college system’s seventh main campus in fall 2019. It has four locations: LSC-Houston Fairbanks, LSC-Houston North Fallbrook, LSC-Houston North Greenspoint and LSC-Houston North Victory.
