MONTGOMERY, TX -- This week’s Veteran is Tom Wyka, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 - 1969. He early enlisted while still in high school, and went to basic training three days after graduating. Tom served on a Heavy Guided Missile Cruiser for three years in the North Atlantic. This was during serious Cold War times when any seemingly minor incident could launch a major international crisis between the Soviet Union and the Western powers. He also had a few Mediterranean cruises during that time. Tom dealt with Soviet submarines and surface ships while in the Navy, and went years on end without returning to the States. In the last year of his naval service, Wyka, spent time on a Destroyer in the Caribbean still dealing with the Soviets, who wanted to warm their feet in the waters. After the Navy, Tom went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Aircraft Traffic Controller in Houston, and for some reason maintained an even keel. After he retired from that Tom started his own business as a commercial and residential real estate inspector. Wyka is a member of the notorious Wisecrack Warriors at the Lone Star Honor Flight Veterans Group meetings, which is the perfect group for ex-FAA guys. Good Luck Tom, and Congratulations on being ‘Veteran of the Week’.
