THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Following their 7-0 victory over the College Park Cavaliers, The Woodlands Highlanders must bring their best on Friday if they hope to keep a potential playoff bid alive.

The tightly contested District 13-6A has little room for teams that fail to win during the crucial months of March and April. The top of the district standings have remained largely the same, with the Willis Wildkats maintaining a firm grasp on the number one spot.

Beneath the top spot is chaos. It is a mishmash of teams riding win streaks and teams losing their grip on playoff spots, all trying to steady the course toward the postseason.

Entering their Friday matchup against the Cavaliers, The Woodlands Highlanders carry a healthy three-game winning streak that has situated the team with an outside shot at the playoffs.

Their best shot is to continue their winning ways and make an all-out push for fourth place in the standings. The potential for a tie-breaker matchup for the district’s last playoff spot is also an option. By tying the current fourth-place team, Conroe, the Highlanders could force their way into a winner-take-all extra game to determine who will take the district’s final postseason ticket.

Looking to keep their rivals outside and regain their balance are the College Park Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers are only one of two teams in the district to have taken down Willis thus far, with the other being Conroe. Their ability to defeat the district’s top contenders has allowed them to set themselves into a solid second-place spot in the current standings.

However, their 7-0 defeat at the hands of The Woodlands has brought the team back into the mix of programs attempting to climb the standings ahead of the final game of the season on the 23rd.

The loss now ties College Park with Oak Ridge and only sets the team half a game ahead of Conroe. The combination of lethal teams poising themselves for a run makes the Cavaliers’ spot all the more challenging.

If the Highlanders can take down their rivals on the road, their chances of making it to the postseason will grow immensely while dragging College Park further down.

The gritty effort from the Cavaliers will look to prevail in the hopes of regaining the team’s balance in the face of hungry teams looking to take their spot. Should they win, College Park would re-distance themselves from the rest of the pack and push their rivals further out of contention.

The hopes of a potential playoff bid for both teams rest on either squad’s ability to win when it matters most. Tune in to The Woodlands Online Sports’s presentation of high school baseball in cooperation with LSN to see who will emerge victor in the all-important War of the Woods.
