MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCTXSheriff) is warning residents of a disturbing rise in phone scams involving individuals impersonating real MCSO officers. These criminals are spoofing official phone numbers and using the names and ranks of actual deputies and command staff—such as “Captain So-and-So” or “Lieutenant So-and-So”—to intimidate and defraud innocent citizens.

In these calls, scammers claim there is an urgent legal matter that requires immediate payment to avoid arrest, fines, or other penalties. They may even instruct you to stay on the phone and pressure you to transfer funds through apps like CashApp, Zelle, or similar platforms.

Let us be clear:

  • MCTXSheriff will NEVER call you to demand payment.
  • We DO NOT accept money over the phone or through payment apps.
  • We will NEVER demand that you stay on the phone while making a payment.

REMEMBER THE SCAM PLAYBOOK:
Urgent Matter + Immediate Action = Transfer of Money to Avoid Penalty

If you receive a suspicious call:

  1. HANG UP IMMEDIATELY.
  2. Do NOT share personal or financial information.
  3. If you are unsure whether the call was legitimate, contact the court or our office directly.

“We take the safety and financial security of our residents seriously,” said Sheriff Rand Henderson. “These scammers are manipulative and convincing, but we want everyone to know—law enforcement does not operate this way.”

Help us stop these criminals by sharing this message with friends, family, and neighbors—especially vulnerable individuals who may be more susceptible to high-pressure tactics.

Stay alert, stay skeptical, and stay safe.
