HUNTSVILLE, TX -- Electricity is vital to nearly every part of daily life, but it is especially critical for essential services like hospitals, where reliable power supports patient care and powers life-saving equipment.

Huntsville Memorial Hospital has become the first healthcare facility to participate in Entergy Texas’ Power Through program. Power Through delivers whole-facility backup generation to customers at a much lower cost than a typical, self-build backup solution. Entergy Texas provides maintenance to the units at no additional cost to the facility––making it easy for customers to literally “power through” any outage.

“This program will allow us to lead the way for healthcare resiliency in Walker County,” said Patrick Shannon, CEO of Huntsville Memorial Hospital. “In the past, we were forced to run operations at limited capacity when an outage occurred. Now, our collaboration with Entergy Texas ensures that our patients and staff will be protected during unexpected outages, and that our hospital will continue serving the community no matter what challenges arise.”

The addition of Entergy Texas’ state-of-the-art backup power systems will add enough electricity to energize the entire 123,000-square-foot facility should a power outage occur.

“By investing in resilient infrastructure at Huntsville Memorial Hospital, we’re safeguarding access to uninterrupted care for area families, neighbors and first responders,” said Anne Woodard, Chair of the Board of Managers of the Walker County Hospital. “We are grateful to Entergy Texas. It’s encouraging to see innovation and collaboration coming together to strengthen the services our community depends on most.”

When the generators are not being used to provide host facilities backup power, they can be used to provide additional power to the grid in times of high demand, benefiting all Entergy Texas customers.

“A reliable and resilient power grid is critical to meet the rapidly growing energy demands we’re seeing today — and that includes protecting the systems that our communities rely on,” said Stuart Barrett, vice president of customer service at Entergy Texas. “Entergy’s Power Through program is about making it easy and cost-effective for essential service providers like the Huntsville Memorial Hospital to maintain power when they need it most.”

The Power Through program was approved by the Public Utility Commission of Texas in February of this year. Prior to receiving PUCT approval, Entergy Texas deployed six pilot units that provided critical backup power during major storms, including Hurricane Laura and Winter Storms Uri and Elliott. These pilot projects have demonstrated the program’s effectiveness in protecting essential services and supporting our communities.
