Texas Historical Commission announces an Historical Marker Dedication ceremony for Tamina Freedom Colony

THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Texas Historical Commission recently announced that there will be an Historical Marker Dedication for Tamina Freedom Colony to be held at Tamina Community Park, 19500 Main Street in Conroe, on Saturday, December 6 from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
According to the Commission, this is the first state historical marker in South Montgomery County and celebrates the lives of newly freed African Americans and others who made a life for their families after the Civil War and through the 20th century.
Tamina Freedom Colony has a venerable history for Montgomery County. Originally called “Tammanym” it was founded in 1871 by formerly enslaved people who helped build the Houston and Great Northern Railroad. It was one of the first communities established by freedmen after emancipation. The community grew with the local lumber industry, building its own schools and churches, and remained a close-knit community for generations.
Today, the community – just east of I-45 between The Woodlands and Conroe – is caught up in the growth (and growing pains) of county expansion and population growth. Though infrastructure sometimes struggles to keep up with the pace, the spirit of the community is stronger than ever as residents are resolved to expand and advance while keeping its legacy and history alive.
