Tu Camino scholarship helps Lone Star College System student pursue her dream career
HOUSTON, TX -- Nursing is more than a career path for Dayana Alvarenga—it’s a calling rooted in compassion, care and the desire to make a difference in people’s lives. She plans to work toward achieving this dream at Lone Star College System.
“I dream of working in hospitals or community clinics where I can care for patients from diverse backgrounds and provide comfort, knowledge and healing,” she said. “I am especially interested in becoming involved in patient education and public health initiatives that empower individuals to take control of their well-being. I want to give back to my community and be a source of strength for others, just as so many nurses have been for my own family in times of need.”
Lone Star College Foundation teamed up with TelevisaUnivision for the third consecutive year to present Alvarenga, a future LSC-Kingwood nursing student, with the Tu Camino Scholarship. The $15,000 award will help cover tuition, books and other expenses as Alvarenga pursues a path in line with her values, passions and goals.
“Lone Star College Foundation is proud to partner with TelevisaUnivision and support Dayana as she works toward becoming a nurse,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation executive director. “We look forward to cheering her on and seeing her succeed in this next chapter.”
Spanish for “your path,” the Tu Camino Scholarship requires applicants to write a 500-word essay about how the opportunity would help them grow in their careers or pivot to a new career path. The annual scholarship is open to adults with a high school diploma or GED who live within TelevisaUnivision’s Greater Houston broadcast area. Applicants must also have a minimum 2.5 GPA from high school or previous college experience and meet LSCS’s admissions criteria.
"We at TelevisaUnivision are thrilled to join Lone Star College System for another year of the Tu Camino Scholarship program to support adult students pursuing higher education," said Marie Barden, TelevisaUnivision regional chief revenue officer. "This scholarship program reflects our commitment to fostering talent and providing opportunities for students to achieve their full potential, as part of our Univision Contigo community initiative.”
Alvarenga is pursuing an Associate of Science in Nursing at LSC-Kingwood with plans to become a registered nurse and eventually continue her education at the University of Houston.
“This scholarship will not only relieve the financial burden of tuition and educational expenses, but it will also empower me to devote my energy to learning, training and gaining hands-on experience in the health care field,” said Alvarenga. “It will also give me the peace of mind to focus on developing the critical thinking and technical skills needed to succeed in nursing school and beyond.”
