THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The Players Theatre Company was recently awarded a grant from the Montgomery County Community Foundation to support the theatre’s Penguin Project, a nationally-recognized program that gives young artists with special needs the opportunity to perform in a fully staged musical alongside peer mentors. As the designated inaugural replica chapter of the Penguin Project in the Houston area, The Players Theatre Company will use the funds to help underwrite expenses for performances of the musical “Annie Jr.” next spring.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Montgomery County Community Foundation for their generous support of this program,” said Cindy Siple, Managing Director of The Players Theatre Company. “Their backing allows us to begin creating a truly inclusive theatrical experience where children of all abilities are encouraged to dream, grow, and shine. Because of their belief in the importance of this program, The Penguin Project will be an opportunity for these special artists to build confidence, foster friendships, and remind every participant that they belong on our stage and in our theatre family.”
The Penguin Project started in 2004 in Peoria, Illinois by Dr. Andrew Morgan and has grown to 55 chapters in 22 states. Through this program, special needs children have been shown to increase communication skills, improve socialization and self-esteem as well as building lasting friendships and confidence that continues long after the final curtain.

The Penguin Project rehearsals begin mid-January with each Penguin Artist paired with an able-bodied peer mentor of the same age who provides one-on-one support throughout rehearsals and performances. The production of “Annie Jr,” a heartwarming show that celebrates inclusion, resilience, and joy – will be performed next May 22 through 24, 2026 at The Owen Theatre in downtown Conroe.

Montgomery County Community Foundation, established in 1983 by Reverend Don Gebert and George Mitchell, is a permanent fund that provides for the present and future well-being of the community by acting as a hub where local donors, nonprofits and community needs meet.
