Woodlands Church Athlete Of The Week: Cruz Romo Helps Secure A Strong Start For The Woodlands
THE WOODLANDS – This week, varsity baseball kicked off as several teams traveled to out-of-district tournaments to start the season. The Woodlands, along with fellow District 13 members College Park and Willis, traveled to the Cy-Fair ISD Classic, a tournament that features many of the top teams from around the Houston area. The Woodlands finished the weekend with a 4-1 record, losing only to Bridgeland in a close 3-2 game, giving them a solid start to the season. There were several key performances in these games, but the one that stands out is Cruz Romo’s game against Steele High School, which earns him the Woodlands Church Athlete of the Week.
In the 5 games The Woodlands played this weekend, Cruz Romo was a key contributor when on the diamond. The Woodlands took down Steele in their opening game, 14-3, with Romo going 3-for-4, scoring 1 run, and driving in 2 RBIs. Romo also hit a double in the top of the 4th to drive in runs but was unfortunately caught on 3rd while trying to advance. Romo was also the only one to drive in runs against Bridgeland, getting 2 RBIs for The Woodlands’ only points in their only loss so far. He’s batting .500 right now, which will inevitably go down, but it is a solid start for the junior slugger.
Some other players to mention from this weekend's tournament are Cash Clayton, Eliot Stinson, Cash McWhorter, and Chase Bradley, all of whom had great moments in all 5 games. Stinson gets a nod for getting The Woodlands their 1st HR of the season, hitting it deep over the left field wall for a 3-run HR in the opening game against Steele. Bradley currently leads the team in hits with 7 in 10 at-bats, while Clayton isn’t far behind with 5 hits thus far. McWhorter seems to be one of the top scorers thus far, scoring 5 runs on 5 hits this weekend. This Woodlands team already looks to be moving like a well-oiled machine and could be interesting to watch when they take on Grand Oaks next week in their first district game.
