The Players Theatre Company Presents Potato Gumbo
CONROE, TX -- A Heartfelt, Hilarious Look at Family Comes to Conroe in Potato Gumbo
The Players Theatre Company presents Jean Ciampi’s poignant, Pulitzer-nominated play
The Players Theatre Company proudly presents Potato Gumbo, a touching and darkly comedic play by board president and playwright Jean Ciampi.
Blending humor, heart, and hard truths, Potato Gumbo explores the unpredictable journey of aging through the story of Gretchen and Thomas—a couple navigating love, independence, and the shifting roles between parents and their adult children. What begins as a whimsical dream of attending the New Orleans School of Cooking quickly spirals into a series of unexpected events, including an impromptu road trip, a police escort home, and deeper questions about memory, health, and autonomy.
As Gretchen’s behavior grows increasingly erratic, her family must confront a difficult reality: where is the line between individuality and decline? And when does care become control?
“Potato Gumbo is a story that so many families will recognize,” says Ciampi. “It’s funny, it’s messy, and it’s deeply human. At its core, it’s about love—how we hold onto it, and how we let go.”
At a time when more families than ever are navigating the realities of aging parents, shifting independence, and questions around long-term care, Potato Gumbo speaks directly to a shared, often unspoken experience. As life expectancy rises and multi-generational caregiving becomes increasingly common, the play invites audiences to reflect on dignity, autonomy, and the emotional complexity of caring for those who once cared for us. With both humor and honesty, it opens the door to conversations many families are already having—but rarely in public.
Directed by Jeff Merriman, the production features a talented local cast including Cindy Siple as Gretchen Nelson, Rusty Groos as Thomas Trahan, Jamie Lyn Faulkner as Barbara Winter, Daniel Rodriguez as Jack Trahan, Henry de la Garza as Jim Cappazoll, Peggy Sampson as Gail Johnson, and Kristen Bays as Donna Holbrook.
“Directing Potato Gumbo has been about finding the truth inside both the humor and the heartbreak,” says Merriman. “These characters feel incredibly real—they’re flawed, funny, and deeply human. I think audiences will see themselves and their families in this story, and hopefully leave not just entertained, but a little more open to the conversations we often avoid.”
Produced by special arrangement with Next Stage Press, and sponsored by Acme Consulting, this poignant work offers audiences a blend of laughter and reflection, delivering a powerful theatrical experience that resonates across generations.
