Delight for Dads: Family-fun things to do for Father’s Day Weekend in The Woodlands

THE WOODLANDS, TX – Father’s Day originated in the United States to honor fatherhood and paternal bonds, evolving from a local initiative into a permanent national holiday. The first recorded service honoring fathers occurred in July of 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia, commemorating men killed in a coal mining explosion. However, the holiday’s primary founder was Sonora Smart Dodd, who campaigned to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone. The first official Father’s Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington, chosen to coincide with her father’s birthday in June.

Despite early support from Presidents Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and Calvin Coolidge eight years later, the holiday faced resistance for decades due to perceptions of it being a commercial gimmick or unnecessary. President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in 1966. But it wasn’t until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed P.L. 92-278, that Father’s Day became a permanent national holiday in the United States.

Today, despite the Mother’s Day commercial onslaught of jewelry, flowers, and upscale meals, Father’s Day gifts are marked by neckties (more than 100 million sold yearly) and humorous greeting cards.
