Community Impact Story
The group in front of Byron Glacier
CONROE, TX — A dedicated team of 11 volunteers from First Presbyterian Church recently returned from a transformative mission trip to Alaska, where they spent June 14-19, 2026 serving local communities through various ministry and service projects.
The team, primarily composed of local youth, traveled to Wasilla to partner with organizations dedicated to disaster relief and community support. The group focused their efforts on hands-on service, including significant projects at the Alaska Disaster Relief warehouse and various clean-up initiatives.
Their ministry extended into Anchorage, where the team spent a day at the Anchorage Senior Activity Center, participating in activities and gardening alongside local seniors to enhance their quality of life. They also assisted the Downtown Hope Center Soup Kitchen with lunch preparations, helping to provide over 600 meals to Alaskans in need.
Beyond their service work, the team experienced the breathtaking natural beauty of the region. Their itinerary included a scenic drive along Turnagain Arm, a hike to Byron Glacier, and a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. A highlight of the trip was a final-day glacier cruise through Portage Bay, offering the team a moment of reflection on their week of service.
Special recognition is due to Group Leaders Dena and Mark Sowden, whose dedicated leadership and coordination were instrumental in the trip's success. Dena, the Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian, and Mark guided the team with a commitment to service that left a lasting impact on both the participants and the Alaskan communities they served.
This experience was made possible by Thirst Missions, a ministry specializing in high-quality, high-impact mission trips that connect teams with real needs.
