HOUSTON, TX -- The YMCA of Greater Houston commenced its community-wide initiative, YMCA Operation Backpack, supporting youth across Houston by providing school supplies, backpacks, and opportunities to attend YMCA after-school programs. For the 22nd consecutive year, YMCA locations across the Houston area will collect and distribute backpacks and essential school supplies to more than 30,000 Houston area youth, ensuring every student feels confident as they head into the upcoming school year.

Initiative provides more than 30,000 Houston-area students with school essentials this 2026-2027 school year

"Every child deserves to walk into the classroom feeling prepared and excited to learn," said Stephen Ives, president and CEO, YMCA of Greater Houston. "With YMCA Operation Backpack, our goal is to remove barriers that stand in the way of a child's success, so every student has the opportunity to connect and thrive. We’re grateful for the volunteers, donors and community partners whose generosity makes this effort possible.”

According to Houston State of Health, an interactive data portal by the Houston Health Department, nearly 24% of children in Houston live below the poverty level, making it even more critical to ensure every student has the supplies and support they need to succeed in the classroom. With generous support from H-E-B, YMCA Operation Backpack will help thousands of students across Greater Houston head back to school equipped for success.

Now through August 1, community members can support YMCA Operation Backpack by:

  • Dropping off a new backpack at any participating YMCA of Greater Houston location.
  • Donating online at ymcaoperationbackpack.org to support after-school programming
  • Volunteering at a local backpack distribution event.
  • Sharing the campaign with family, friends and colleagues.

With each donation, the YMCA of Greater Houston can continue its mission of empowering youth, strengthening families and creating opportunities for all. In addition to providing backpacks and school supplies, funds raised through YMCA Operation Backpack will expand families’ access to YMCA after-school programs, where students will receive homework assistance, build friendships, develop new skills and stay engaged in a safe, supportive environment.

Through initiatives like YMCA Operation Backpack, the YMCA of Greater Houston remains a dedicated cornerstone of connection and development. All donations are tax-deductible as the YMCA of Greater Houston is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
