MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- Mothers and sons from the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) Magnolia Chapter rolled up their sleeves this September to help provide local children with something every child deserves: a safe and comfortable place to sleep.

As part of its 2026–2027 Ultimate Gift, YMSL Magnolia partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Montgomery County and joined YMSL chapters from The Woodlands and Montgomery for a community-wide service project. Together, volunteers built 90 beds and collected more than 150 bedding sets for children in need throughout Montgomery County.

For YMSL Magnolia, the project involved much more than one day of building beds. Sixty-eight Magnolia members participated in donations, 52 mothers and young men took part in bedding setup and the bed build, eight participated in bedding preparation, and 32 YMSL participants helped deliver beds to local families.

Those deliveries gave members the opportunity to see firsthand what their hours of service ultimately meant: local children ending the day with a bed of their own.

“My sons and I were able to help with the bed build for Ultimate Gift. This was an amazing opportunity to have a real hands-on impact in the community, and it was inspiring to see all the different chapters of YMSL unite,” said Erin Vierus, Vice President of Communications for YMSL Magnolia. “Seeing the completed bed pieces at the end of our shift really helped my sons see the progress we made. We were so happy to be able to do this for kids in need in our own community.”

The project coincided with the 9/11 Day of Service and was part of Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s Bunks Across America initiative. While YMSL chapters across the country participated in similar service projects, the Magnolia Chapter’s focus remained close to home: serving children and families within its own community.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to building and delivering handmade, fully furnished beds to children who do not have beds of their own. Volunteers of all skill levels can participate in everything from building and preparing bedding to delivering and assembling beds in families’ homes.

For the mothers and sons of YMSL Magnolia, the Ultimate Gift provided an opportunity to serve side-by-side while allowing the young men to see the tangible results of their work. A piece of lumber they helped sand or assemble ultimately became part of a bed where a child in their own community would sleep that night.
