LSC–University Park’s “Uproar” earns nine regional awards for student writing and art
HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College–University Park’s student-run literary arts magazine, “Uproar,” earned nine awards in the Community College Humanities Association’s literary magazine competition, including four first-place honors and second place for Best Magazine in the Southwestern Region.
“Seeing our students recognized across so many categories is especially meaningful because it reflects the range of creative talent represented in ‘Uproar,’” said Amy Young, humanities faculty member and co-sponsor of the magazine. “For many contributors, this is one of their first opportunities to share their work with a wider audience. Recognition like this gives them confidence in their abilities and encourages them to continue developing their creative voices.”
The competition recognizes outstanding student writing, photography and artwork from community colleges across the country. Entries compete within regional divisions, with awards recognizing both individual student contributions and the overall quality of literary magazines.
“Uproar” students earned recognition in four individual categories:
Photography
- First place: “Sugar Rainbow” by Dania Hatahet
- Third place: “Blinding Lights” by Cambry Charles
Artwork
- First place: “Longing For” by Rama Nabusly
- Third place: “Self Portrait based on the Bacchante” by Dania Hatahet
Poetry
- First place: “The Algorithm is Watching” by Jonathan Brown
- Second place: “Self-Portrait as Jenga” by Jonathan Paul
Short Stories
- First place: “Weight” by Jackson Nugent
- Third place: “The Pond” by Marie Tineo
In addition to the eight individual awards, the 2026 edition of “Uproar” received second place for Best Magazine in the Southwestern Region, recognizing the publication's overall quality, presentation and student work.
Now in its 13th year, “Uproar” provides LSC–University Park students with opportunities to publish original writing and visual art while gaining experience in the editorial and publication process. Guided by faculty co-sponsors Young and Gregory Oaks, student editors help select and revise submissions for publication.
The 2026 edition featured work from approximately 30 contributors.
The latest honors build on the magazine’s national recognition in the National Council of Teachers of English’ 2025 Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) program, where “Uproar” earned REALM First Class, the program’s highest distinction.
Through “Uproar,” LSC–University Park continues to provide students with opportunities to share their work, build creative skills and gain recognition beyond the classroom.
