Compassionate care in the emergency department has become more challenging during the pandemic. The stress of personal protective equipment (PPE) and patient satisfaction scores threaten the intimacy of the doctor-patient relationship. In this talk, an emergency department physician shows how a curious toddler helped refocus her energy back to the patient and how “de-armoring” to show up as our unscripted human self helps us reconnect with each other and ourselves.

Dr. Anita Bangale is an emergency physician. She has served as Medical Director of the Emergency Department at St. Luke’s Hospital and has emphasized department wellness during the COVID-19 pandemic. She currently works as a physician and owner at America’s ER, where she creates true partnerships with her patients. This talk was given at a local TEDx event at TEDxBreckenridge in Breckenridge, CO, and was produced independently of the TED Conferences. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx.
