Mitchell Inducted into Texas Tennis Hall of Fame
George P. Mitchell, founder of The Woodlands, was inducted into the Texas Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday, November 10, at a ceremony in Waco.
Mitchell, 88, began his tennis career at an early age, competing in local and regional tournaments as a youngster. After starring at Ball High School, Mitchell was team captain on the Texas A&M University men’s tennis team his senior year in 1940. He later competed in the Gordon Cup, the United States Tennis Association National Grass Court Championships and other major tournaments in the Galveston-Houston area.
For over 20 years, Mitchell has volunteered for the Houston Tennis Patrons and the Houston Tennis Association. He also founded the Houston and The Woodlands racquet clubs, and developed Texas A&M ’s George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Mitchell was one of five people inducted as the 27th class since the Hall of Fame’s founding in 1981. Also inducted at the ceremony were: John Kniffen, Chuck LeMaster, Semp Russ and Barbara Smith.
