Record Gas Prices for Memorial Day Travel

HOUSTON, Texas -– Memorial Day travelers are paying the highest pump prices ever, according to AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. All of the 11 regions surveyed in Texas set a new record this week. The statewide average is $3.730 a gallon, a weekly increase of five cents. Nationally, the average price jumped six cents to a record $3.83 a gallon.

“Texas travelers will encounter the highest averages ever recorded for a gallon of gasoline,” said AAA Texas spokeswoman Rose Rougeau. “We estimate about 1.95 million people will be driving to their holiday destination, down slightly compared to last Memorial Day weekend.”

The most expensive gasoline in Texas can be found in Amarillo at $3.75 a gallon, where the average increased five cents. The state's cheapest gas is in El Paso at $3.67 a gallon, up four cents.
