THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The Woodlands American Legion Post 305 is participating in the Birdies for Charity, a raffle conducted by the Houston Golf Association (HGA). Held in conjunction with the Shell Houston Open, the grand prize winner will receive a new car. The winner of the raffle will have correctly chosen the number of golf birdies that will be amassed during the Shell Houston Open, set for March 25 – 31 at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas.

The raffle is open to non-profit organizations who are furnished Pledge Forms to use for estimating the number of birdies made during the golf tournament. The rules of the Birdies for Charity raffle put the cost for each guess at $20, and the participant can have as many guesses as they have $20's. Another way to place a guess is by pledging one cent for each birdie that will be made.

There is always more than one winner who guesses the correct number of birdies. The winners assemble at the car dealer after the birdies have been counted. Each is given a key and each tries to start the car with their key. If it starts, the car is yours. If it doesn't start, the chance goes on to the next participant until the magic key makes it to the lock and starts the car.

The Shell Houston Open Birdies for Charity has generated nearly $6 million for local non-profit organizations since 1999.

To be eligible to join the American Legion, one must have served in the military during the time of war.
