THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX) recently commended the in-home care company for 10 years of service in The Woodlands, an honor fresh on the heels of their 2013 "Best of The Woodlands" ranking as well as top designations from industry watchdog Home Care Pulse in the categories of "Best of Home Care" and "Employer of Choice."

"We are so honored to be recognized by a congressman as distinguished as Kevin Brady," says Beverly Brinson, LCSW, executive director of Homewatch CareGivers of The Woodlands. "He fostered a pro-business climate in this area that has allowed many businesses to thrive from the time he was a leader of The Woodlands Chamber of Commerce to today."

Many health crises force individuals to lean on family members and close friends as unqualified health care providers. Homewatch CareGivers is on call, ready to step in and help for as little or as much time is necessary with skilled care and advice on medical options. “People get shoved into a situation that they're not trained for," says Sue Brinson of Homewatch CareGivers, a nurse for 35 years. "That can be as harmful as helpful."

As the effects of aging begin to show on loved ones, Homewatch CareGivers is able to step in and provide guidance for those who might not understand how to deal with dementia. Homewatch CareGivers has developed a Dementia Tour to give caregivers the experience of walking in elderly patients' shoes, figuratively and literally.

Glasses simulate deteriorated sight, earphones convey a confusing mix of sounds that accompany hearing aids, unevenly soled shoes produce an uneven gait and fingers are taped together to imitate the effects of arthritis. Participants soon realize how hard it is to load the dishwasher, fold laundry and follow hard-to-hear directions. Put memory issues in the mix, and frustration will follow.

"It's enlightening to see what everyday people expect from seniors, to trade places with them," says Brooks, who took the Dementia Tour and has focused on senior care for the past 25 years. "My empathy level notched up quite a bit."

Homewatch CareGivers of The Woodlands is always looking for dedicated individuals who understand that seniors have good days and bad, and want to make those days better. Work schedules of a few days a week with one weekend a month are currently available.
