THE WOODLANDS, Texas – A new study from a leading academic medical center suggests that senior citizens with higher education and intellectual activity experience less cognitive decline, including those at high-risk for dementia. To stimulate the minds of mature adults and encourage lifelong learning, Conservatory Senior Living is bringing Discovery University to Houston.

Program to bring life-long learning benefits to seniors in Houston

Discovery Senior Living established Discovery University in 2010 to bring a new level of education offering senior learning programs to the communities it serves, and is pleased to bring this new concept to Houston.

“Learning is a life-long experience and we now know that it brings many benefits to the aging population,” said Thomas Harrison, CEO and founder, Discovery Senior Living. “In addition to keeping up with what’s going on in the world, seniors have fun learning something new or discussing history. Incorporating education in activities means that the aging mind will be more stimulated and the social interaction can greatly enrich their lives.”

Free and open to the public, Discovery University’s first program titled “Lectures on American Exceptionality” will be led by Professor Philip Leto III, J.D., chairman of the education department at Discovery University. Leto began his career as an attorney in both public and private practices, then followed his passion for researching and communications by becoming a lecturer and educator.

Classes are held monthly beginning Friday, Sept. 26 through Dec. 12 in the Houston area at two Conservatory locations, Alden Bridge in The Woodlands and Champion Forest in Spring. For more information or to RSVP, call 832-482-4344 for Alden Bridge (The Woodlands) or 281-378-6069 for Champion Forest (Spring). Participants are encouraged to register two days prior to the class.

Leto’s discussion will include topics on some of America’s greatest eras of challenge and innovation including the following: Manifest Destiny and the Growth of a Nation; Grant and Lee; President Truman, we need to tell you about this new weapon we’re planning to test in New Mexico; and The Race to the Moon.

Conservatory Senior Living offers affordable, all-inclusive luxury independent living for active seniors. Each of its five communities feature a Grande Clubhouse with resort-style amenities, chef-prepared gourmet meals, a full calendar of recreational and social activities and professional team serving residents 24 hours a day. Locations include Wells Branch in Austin, Keller Town Center and Plano in the Dallas area, and Champion Forest (Spring) and Alden Bridge (The Woodlands) in the Houston area. Conservatory is managed and operated by Discovery Senior Living, developers and operators of numerous award-winning senior living communities across Texas, Florida and Alabama.
