MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - This will be the first week this summer that Woodlands residents will actually have to use their sprinkler systems. The seven-day forecast is predicting temperatures in the high nineties all week through next Tuesday, with just a ten percent chance of rain daily.

Residents and businesses required to adhere to defined irrigation schedule.

Monday and Tuesday will be sunny, but partly cloudy skies will provide some relief Wednesday through Friday. The following weekend will be sunny Saturday through Monday.

The Woodlands Joint Powers Agency (WJPA) cautions about over-watering, stating that it’s the most frequent mistake homeowners make in lawn care. Too much water promotes a shallow root system, and this causes grass and plants to be much more vulnerable to hot/dry weather.

The defined irrigation schedule is currently in force and requires that residents and business adhere to times and days of the week to water lawns and plants, based on an odd/even numbering system. The schedule is as follows:

Odd addresses (those ending in 1,3,5,7,9):

8 p.m. Fridays to 6 a.m. Saturdays

8 p.m. Tuesdays to 6 a.m. Wednesdays

Even addresses (0,2,4,6,8):

8 p.m. Saturdays to 6 a.m. Sundays

8 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursdays

According to The WJPA website, beginning June 1, inspectors with cameras started patrolling neighborhoods and issuing notices to those who are in violation of the schedule. Time and date stamped photos are taken to confirm the violation. The resident will be presented with the notice if at home. If not, a notice will be hung on their front door.

The first violation is a warning, but the second will be a $50 surcharge, the third $100, and a fourth and subsequent violations will be $200 each.

The requirements not only apply to residences, but also businesses, churches, public facilities, and all other properties located in The Woodlands. (The Defined Irrigation Schedule does not apply to residents of Creekside Park Village or May Valley.)

Sprinklers need not be run any longer than twenty minutes to provide the lawn with a sufficient soaking twice a week. The WJPA recommends a drip irrigation system for optimum lawn irrigation. For more information about drip irrigations systems and other water conservation tips, visit the WJPA.
