THE WOODLANDS, TX – Saving lives and property is the mission of any fire department. Chief Josh Kennedy of Timber Lakes Volunteer Fire Department did not know that the life he would be saving would be his own 2-year old son’s life.

At the July ESD 14 monthly meeting Fire Chief Kennedy emotionally shared his appreciation of learning emergency medical response training. The CPR and choking medical response is credited for saving his son’s life.

Chief Kennedy was out to dinner with his family at a local restaurant. As they were leaving the restaurant, their son put a peppermint candy in his mouth. They have taught their son, Zachary to always chew any hard candy right away. While his wife, Kimberly was putting Zachary in his car seat she asked him if he chewed the candy and at that moment she noticed Zachary inhaled the peppermint and he was choking and trying to breath. She removed him from the car seat immediately and started back blows trying to dislodge the candy. Josh noticed what was going on and went in to action and took over. Zachary had a partial obstruction and after several back blows the candy was dislodged and Zachary was back to normal.

CPR training along with the Heimlich Maneuver saves lives. The Timber Lakes VFD offers classes on a regular basis. Upon request from the community, the department will schedule a class in August before school begins. Classes are also arranged for individuals, work environments, and organizations. Sign up for the next class at www.TimberLakesVFD.org or email CPR@TimberLakesVFD.org

The Timber Lakes Volunteer Fire Department with ESD 14 serves the residents of Timber Lakes/Timber Ridge subdivision and surrounding areas serving approximately 6000 individuals and 3 square miles in South Montgomery County.

Chief Kennedy added, “This was a close call for us and we were thankful for having the training beforehand, the outcome could have been much worse. I believe everyone needs this training, as a fire department we want to offer classes to assist our residents to be prepared in any medical emergency until first responders can arrive”.
