State News

Governor Greg Abbott held a press conference yesterday providing an update on statewide hospital capacity. The Governor’s message is that Texas has abundant hospital capacity and can continue to remain open while continuing efforts to contain and treat COVID-19. The Governor reiterated the need to evaluate the reasons behind recent increases in reported hospitalization numbers. For example, he provided several examples of significant increases in positive cases where additional testing in congregant settings (assisted living, jails, etc.) has occurred. Nearly all assisted living facilities in the state have been tested and a majority of the jails and prisons have as well.

The state uses a five-level system for indicating hospital capacity with 5 being the least threat to capacity (normal hospital staffing/operations) and 1 being the highest (requiring outside hospital capacity such as mobile hospital units, conventions centers, etc.). Texas continues to operate at Level 5 with all current hospitalizations being treated within normal hospital operations and staffing.

The state has noted an increase in positive tests in those under 30. The governor indicated it is suspected this age group is visiting bars and interacting in more group settings than others. As such, the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Control has indicated to licensees that a violation of current guidelines will result in a 30-day suspension of a liquor license and a second violation will result in a 60-day suspension of a liquor license.

The Governor and his team continued to reiterate the need to practice good health practices like wearing masks, maintaining good hand hygiene, social distancing and remaining home when possible.
