THE WOODLANDS, TX -- It is likely you will be involved in a car accident at some point. Even if you are a careful driver, you cannot control other drivers’ actions.

Collisions are often caused by drivers who are intoxicated or distracted by phone calls, texting, or even reading. Data from the 2016 Texas Department of Transportation lists Montgomery County as having more fatal crashes than any other county in Texas. One person is killed in Texas by car accident every 2 hours. The most common causes of car accidents include unsafe lane changes, speeding, following too closely, failure to yield, and drive distraction. The Greater Houston area has more fatalities, incapacitating injuries, and Driving Under the Influence accidents than any other area in Texas.

After an accident, the first thing to do is pull over in a safe area out of the way of traffic, if you are able to do so. Check your vehicle for damage after assessing any bodily injuries from the incident. Get contact and insurance information from all drivers involved in the collision, then contact your own insurance provider.

When you are involved in an accident with more than minimal damage, call the police and get information from witnesses. Take photos of the scene, vehicle, and any injuries sustained. If you are injured, this is also the time to call a personal injury attorney certified in handling Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
