HOUSTON, TX -- Crime Stoppers of Houston applauds long time partner Senator John Whitmire's plan to introduce legislation that would require bonding companies to collect at least 10% before a defendant accused of a violent crime posts bond.

Crime Stoppers has never been opposed to MISDEMEANOR bail reform. We are opposed to the discretionary application of the federal court order regarding misdemeanor defendants being applied to felony defendants. CEO Rania Mankarious stated, 'Crime Stoppers has always supported public safety efforts and agrees with the 10 percent requirement and hopes Harris County supports Senator John Whitmire’s proposed legislation. We believe it should be rightfully considered.'

In addition, 'we are hopeful that Harris County leaders will also support the constitutional amendment which failed during the last legislative session that would allow judges discretion (key word) not to grant bond to defendants charged with violent crimes like murder' said Andy Kahan, Director of Victim Services & Advocacy for Crime Stoppers.

We believe passage of such an amendment along with the minimum 10 percent bond fee will make vast improvements on our public safety.
