THE WOODLANDS, TX – Quote of the week: “Mother is the name for God on the lips and hearts of all children.” – Eric Draven, The Crow

While a goodly number of us are prepping for Mother’s Day this Sunday, let’s not forget that there are tons of other fun things to do all week long for you, the kiddos, Mom, or the family and friends. Here are our top five choices for this week.

Thursday, May 5
It’s Cinco de Mayo, a Texas tradition if there ever was one, even if the holiday was originally to commemorate the victory of the Mexican Army’s victory of the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Many restaurants and venues in The Woodlands like to get into the swing of things, including special deals and meals at Margaritaville Lake Resort, Baja Sur, Como Social Club, Fielding’s Local Kitchen and Fielding’s Wood Grill, and Market Street.

Friday, May 6
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is kicking off the season with a country bang. Country music superstars Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town join forces to co-headline this spring’s The Bandwagon Tour. Both critically acclaimed artists in their own right, together Lambert and Little Big Town tout a combined 43 ACM Awards, 23 CMA Awards and seven GRAMMYs. If you’re a C&W fan, this is one concert you don’t want to miss. This is the perfect time of year to enjoy an outdoor concert at the internationally recognized amphitheater that’s a true Woodlands tradition.

Yes, thousands of athletes and an equal number of commuters just recently dealt with the annual IRONMAN competition. But the racing fun for the season isn’t over yet. As one of the premier multi-sport events in the region, the Woodforest Bank TRI offers a beginner-friendly atmosphere, first-rate race management and scenic courses. Produced by The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department, this sprint distance triathlon provides participants with a variety of opportunities to prepare for Race Day, making it an ideal first time race for those just being introduced to the sport. The event culminates with a festive awards party featuring music, great food and beverages. The Woodforest Bank TRI is a USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned event, and served as the Texas State Triathlon Championship in 2017. It consists of a 500-meter open swim, a 12.8-mile bike race, and a 5K run.

The Woodlands is home to some major talent in many arenas, and the literary world is no exception. Space Cadets Collection Collection (no, we didn’t stutter; that’s their name) is hosting a special author appearance/book signing event starting at 10:00 a.m. Jacob Street is a local author and former Space Cadets employee who lets his imagination run wild in his writing and ended up with the entertaining novel Paladin’s Wish: Book One of The Hawthorn Saga. Hailing from the small town of Cleveland, TX, he was influenced by a wide variety of sci-fi and fantasy growing up and has now turned those influences into creative fuel for his own series. The Hawthorn Saga is an urban fantasy centered on a paladin that gets stuck with a genie who can’t grant wishes and constantly demands pancakes. Also, there are dinosaurs and machine guns.
