CONROE, TX -- The Genealogy and Local History Room at the Conroe Central Library will be hosting documentary photographer and author Marti Corn as she discusses what may be the oldest Freedman’s town in Texas – Tamina. Corn is the author of The Ground on Which I Stand, which documents residents of Tamina, and records their oral histories about growing up in a community where many of their newly freed slave ancestors built homes in 1871.

Marti Corn will speak about the history of Tamina, the importance of recorded oral history, and what it can teach us. Saturday, October 29th at 10:00am-12:00am. This program is free and open to Adults, Teens, and supervised Tweens. Registration is required. For more information, please call the Genealogy Department at 936-522-2138, or visit the library calendar of events at www.countylibrary.org.

The Genealogy Room has recently acquired a new traveling display exhibit based on the book, The Ground on Which I Stand, which will be installed on October 3rd throughout the Central Library. Created for schools, libraries, and organizations, this educational traveling kit includes pop-up exhibit banners showcasing photos of residents and their personal stories and resources for teachers. The exhibit will also be available to travel to the six other branches of MCMLS and, later, to local schools. “When Marti contacted me about her research, I knew immediately that the Genealogy Room would be the perfect home to tell the story of this “unknown” community landmark in our midst,” said Librarian Laura Politte.
