Violent Felon Sentenced to 30 Years after High-Speed Chase

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- On Wednesday. September 28, 2022, a jury in the 9th District Court, The Honorable Phil Grant presiding, found Dominique Johnson, 32, guilty of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Evading with a Motor Vehicle. Judge Phil Grant then heard testimony regarding Johnson's previous felony convictions before returning the thirty-year sentence.

In the early morning of March 14, 2022, Trooper Parker with the DPS Highway Patrol Division initiated a traffic stop on Johnson for speeding. Unknown to Trooper Parker. Johnson had stolen the Cadillac XTS he was driving from a bowling alley about thirty- minutes before the traffic stop. As Trooper Poker approached Johnson's vehicle, Johnson drove away. A high-speed pursuit began. Johnson evaded Trooper Parker on FM 1488, reaching speeds over 140 mph on Highway 249 before exiting and driving the wrong way on the service road. Johnson then drove into a neighborhood, where he entered a resident's front yard. Trooper Parker positioned his patrol car to block Johnson's escape and approached Johnson on foot to attempt an arrest. Johnson drove the Cadillac at Trooper Parker, almost striking him, and continued evading. Johnson crashed his vehicle on the service road of Highway 249, and then attempted to escape arrest on foot. Fortunately, Lt. Horger with DPS located Johnson from a helicopter. DPS and multiple other agencies were then able to detain Johnson safely.

During the punishment phase of the trial, Assistant District Attorney Tamara Tyler presented evidence that the defendant had previously been convicted of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in a case where Johnson shot a man in the back. Assistant District Attorney Tyler also presented evidence of Johnson's additional criminal history, including Forgery, Theft, and Burglary of a Building.

This case was investigated with the highest level of professionalism by DPS here in Montgomery County. Trooper Parker with DPS and various other agencies worked quickly to get Johnson in custody before injuring law enforcement or anyone on the road that night.

Assistant District Attorney Tamara Tyler: 'One of the most dangerous encounters law enforcement can have is on traffic stops. and this defendant exhibited all the dangers associated with those. The defendant not only put the community in danger but also threatened the life of a Montgomery County law enforcement officer. Decades in prison for this behavior is the right and just result.
