Lone Star College recognized as a top institution for Hispanics

HOUSTON, TX -- Hispanic Outlook on Education ranked Lone Star College as the fourth largest four-year higher education institution in the nation for the number of Hispanic students enrolled in the 2020-21 academic year. The magazine also noted that LSC was fourth in the country for total associate degrees granted to Hispanic students in 2020-21.

Hispanic Outlook on Education, a monthly publication that provides education news while maintaining a unique Hispanic perspective, publishes this ranking list annually. The publication lists community colleges that offer bachelor’s degrees as 4-year schools. LSC currently offers Nursing, Cybersecurity, Emergency Management and Energy, Manufacturing and Trades Management bachelor’s degrees in addition to over 200 associate degrees and certificate programs.

The publication noted that LSC welcomed more than 41,000 Hispanic students in 2020-21, representing 38% of the total LSC student population. The rankings were determined by the national Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, a method of surveys conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, which recently granted LSC 4-year college status. Data for 2020-21 is the most current available.

LSC was also recognized by Hispanic Outlook on Education for being fourth in the nation in awarding Liberal Arts and Sciences, General Studies, and Humanities degrees to Hispanics. More than 2,600 degrees were conferred, representing 42% of the total number of those degrees LSC awarded in spring 2021.

In addition to being recognized as a leader in Hispanic education by Hispanic Outlook, LSC is designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education, a recognition given to nonprofit institutes with a full-time undergraduate student enrollment that is at least 25 % Hispanic.
