Lone Star College recognizes, salutes U.S. Military for their service this Veterans Day

HOUSTON, TX -- Veterans Day is a time to pay our respects to those who bravely served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Lone Star College is proud to be the higher education institution choice for more than 4,000 veterans, helping them transition from military to civilian life.

LSC will host several special events on Veterans Day to recognize students who served in the military with appreciation breakfasts, luncheons, speaker series and more. Veterans Day is celebrated every year on Nov. 11.

“Lone Star College is proud to welcome veteran students and hire veteran employees,” said Stephen C Head, Ph.D., LSC Chancellor. “We owe them and all veterans our deepest respect and gratitude for their selfless sacrifice, dedication and commitment to our country.”

Lone Star College employs 346 veterans and welcomed 4,133 former military personnel students in fall 2022. LSC has partnered with the Texas Workforce Commission to offer the College Credit for Heroes grant. This grant helped Lone Star College crosswalk military experience to associate degree courses in more than 15 degree programs.

Lavarion Bolling, a United States Marine Corps Sergeant in the reserves and active duty, enrolled at LSC-Montgomery in summer 2021. He earned an associate of arts degree and is currently pursuing an associate of science degree in Nursing. Bolling is the current president of the Student Veterans Association at LSC-Montgomery.

“As a married father of two active daughters, I needed a college that offered quality education close to home,” said Bolling. “Lone Star College-Montgomery has an excellent academic reputation with affordable tuition. My experience there has shaped my future in ways I never imagined.”

Bolling joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 2000 and spent several years in the Surveillance and Target Acquisition Platoon, the home of the Marine Scout Snipers. He also served as the Coxswain (navigator) of multiple vessels, a scout swimmer, a swim instructor and the team leader of other special operation units. After LSC-Montgomery, Bolling plans to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and ultimately return to LSC as a nursing professor.

“I have had so many excellent professors, which made me want to become one within the system,” Bolling said. “I encourage all veterans and dependents to get involved in programs and services that will improve their academic, professional and personal development while at Lone Star College.”

The LSC Veterans Services Program assists veterans, active service members or qualified dependents to enroll and complete their academic goals, preparing them to enter the workforce in their chosen fields. LSC offers many resources and services to help students succeed through a coordinated delivery of on-campus benefits assistance and counseling.
