THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The following events are planned for adults, children, young adults, and their families in January 2023 at George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library, 8125 Ashlane Way, The Woodlands, Texas.

Featured Events at the Library
Wednesday, January 18th from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm – Genealogy @Mitchell: Let’s Get Started – All Ages
Come by the Mitchell Library to Meet and Greet the new Genealogy Librarian of the Conroe Central branch’s Genealogy & History Room. Discover the treasures you can find there to further your family & local histories. Start your family tree and discover why so many people love this hobby, which is perfect for adults, teens, and families.

Tuesday, January 24th at 6:00 pm – Song Solutions: Motions, Potions and Emotions – Ages 0-12
Come join the Mitchell Library for fun, zany, silly, musical, and danncing mayhem with Mr. Mark! There will be science demos, live music, and more.

Monthly Events at the Library
First Wednesday, January 4th from 10:00 am-11:30 am – Adult Needlecrafts: Knit & Stitch
Calling all Needlecrafters! Come by the Mitchell Library Large Meeting Room to socialize while you work on your craft projects. Open to anyone who knits, crochets, embroiders, or does any other needlecraft. Bring your own work-in-progress and supplies.

First Thursday, January 5th at 1:00 pm – Adult Fiction Book Club
Join us in Large Meeting Room 102 for an interesting discussion on this month’s selection, My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. A modern masterpiece from one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors, My Brilliant Friend, is a rich, intense, and generous-hearted story about friendship. Space is limited and registration is required.

Monday, January 9th from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm– Teen Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament– Teens 13-17
Join us at the Mitchell Library where we’re throwin’ it back to Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament on Wii. Prizes will be awarded, and snacks will be provided. Registration appreciated.

Second Tuesday, January 10th at 1:30 pm – Adult Crafternoons
If you’ve got hundreds of “pins” on Pinterest, but just can’t get started, Crafternoons is for you! Each month will feature a free craft that adults 18+ can create. Registration is required. No advanced skills are needed; crafts are self-directed with instructions provided. By registering, you are reserving a craft packet for yourself to create while at the meeting. January’s craft will be a DIY Pendant Necklace!

Saturday, January 14th and January 28th from 10:00 am-4:00 pm – Kid Zone – Ages 0-12
Join us at Mitchell Library for an assortment of fun, family-friendly activities, including coloring pages, board games, and building toys. There is something for everyone! This event is a come-and-go activity, and children must be supervised by an adult.

Third Tuesday, January 17th at 6:30 pm – Adult BYOB (Bring Your Own Book) Club
Choose your own book in this book club with a twist! Every month will have a different theme, and then YOU pick what title to read! Come to the meeting and share what you have read, and build your reading list from the recommendations of others! Registration required. January’s theme is Thriller/Suspense.

Third Wednesday, January 18th at 6:30pm – Adult Evening Book Club
Not sure what to read next? Let us pick the book for you! The Mitchell Evening Book Club reads a mix of fiction and nonfiction selections and meets monthly for a lively discussion of the current book. Registration is required. January’s selection is Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin.

Third Thursday, January 19th at 1:00pm – Adult Nonfiction Book Club
The Nonfiction Book Club will discuss Paleontologist Steve Brussatte’s The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of Their Lost World. Sixty-six million years ago, the Earth’s most fearsome creatures vanished and today remain one of Earth’s greatest mysteries. This book reveals their thrilling, 200-million-year-long story. Any adult may attend. Light refreshments will be served.

Monday, January 23rd from 5:30 pm-8:00 pm– Teen Movie Night– Teens 13-17

Join us for a TEENS-ONLY showing of Jurassic Park Dominion (Rated PG-13). Candy, popcorn, and pizza will be served. Registration required.

Fourth Wednesday, January 25th at 6:30 pm – Adult Evening Mystery Book Club
Do you love a good mystery or thriller? Join us for a different book selection each month. Share your views and make new friends! January’s selection is The Christie Affair by Nina de Gramont.

Last Thursday, January 26th at 1:00pm – Adult Movie Matinee
Come see Mrs. Harris Goes to Parris (2022; Rated Pg-13). In 1950s London, a widowed cleaning lady falls madly in love with a couture Dior dress. After working to fund her dream of owning this dress, Mrs. Harris embarks on an adventure to Paris that will change her outlook and try the future of the House of Dior.

Weekly Events at the Library
Mondays from 10:00 am-11:00 am - Tiny Tots Library Play Time – Ages 3 and younger
A Family Place Library weekly event. This come-and-go program at the Mitchell Library encourages play with educational toys and activities that target early literacy. Spend time together, play in a playgroup atmosphere, make friends, and visit with other parents.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:00 am & 11:00 am - Family Storytime – Ages 5 and younger
Join us at Mitchell Library for a morning of stories. This storytime program is geared for children five and younger and a caregiver and emphasizes stories and activities for toddlers. It is also a great way to meet other families in the area with young children.

Tuesdays from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm – Teen Girls Who Code – Ages 12-17
Learn to code with professional women of ExxonMobil in this 12-week session of Girls Who Code! Registration is required. We ask that girls plan to attend at least 8 of the 12 sessions as space is limited.

Library Holiday Closing
New Year’s Day observed – January 2nd all MCMLS branches closed
Martin Luther King Jr. Day – January 16th all MCMLS branches closed
