HS Boys Basketball: Grand Oaks Secures Win Against Conroe at the Pit

CONROE, TX -- The Conroe Tigers hosted the first place Grand Oaks Grizzlies in the Pit on Tuesday night. It was a must win for both teams as Conroe is holding onto second place with The Woodlands and Grand Oaks is holding a first-place tie with College Park.

The game would begin with a technical foul from the Conroe side due to an illegal move while warming up. Grand Oaks needed to keep the momentum on their side or Conroe will run through the paint and contest their lead. Although Grand Oaks would be up, Conroe would quickly make it a close game by upping the tempo of the game. Grand Oaks’ Tre Lewis sank a couple of threes in the first to give them a 21-17 lead.

In the second, Conroe would explode in the paint and test out the Grand Oaks defense. They would also lock their defense down and put pressure on the Grand Oaks shooter. This would result in a close second quarter going into the half. Conroe would cut the Grand Oaks lead to just three points.



Grand Oaks would come alive in the third quarter driving through the paint and forcing the foul. Conroe struggled with the intensity but was able to get some points on the board. Eight of the 20 points scored in the third quarter for Grand Oaks came from the free throw line. They would head into the fourth quarter up by 11 with a 55-44 lead.

“We had a good third quarter, we had a 15-point lead and we just started making mistakes with the ball and then not making our free-throws.” Said Grand Oaks Head Coach Day about the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth.

Conroe would play tough in the fourth quarter, switching up their momentum and putting pressure on the ball. Grand Oaks would hit the line but fell short missing seven of their 10 attempts. Grand Oaks would also make 15 points while Conroe would make 22.

Although Conroe would hit a huge three pointer at the end, they would fall short to Grand Oaks 70-66. “They did a lot to us defensively to take us [Grand Oaks] out of our game. But we found a way to win.” Said coach Day.



Grand Oaks is on a bye on Friday and set to face Cleveland on the 7th. Conroe will face Cleveland on Friday in hopes to get their winning streak back. Both teams will match up again on the last game of the season at Grand Oaks.
