CONROE, TX -- Gold Star Mother, Margie Taylor, of SPC Joey Martens Lenz who lost his life whiles serving at Fort Hood Feb 1, 2022, has organized an event to take place Tuesday, May 23 at 4:00pm to recognize and pay tribute to soldiers who have lost their lives at the newly renamed Fort Cavazos (Fort Hood) at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, located at 11463 State Highway 195 in Killeen.

The memorial service is to honor, support, and remember the soldiers and their families in advance of Memorial Day. Gold Star Families who lost their hero, veteran support organizations, and the community are encouraged to attend the event. Families of the fallen soldiers are encouraged to attend with enlarged photos of their loved hero. The ceremony will be videoed and live-streamed. Media are encouraged to attend.

According to Mrs. Taylor the names of those who lost their life at the Fort Hood Installation to a non-combat death will be read. “As the 3rd largest Army base in the United States, Fort Hood needs to Do Better and Put People First Over Mission and Weapons”, said Margie Taylor. “The military has failed its service men and women who volunteer to serve our country.”

Mrs. Taylor has support from local, state, and federal elected officials for her event.

Congressman Morgan Luttrell supports Margie Taylor and her mission to make the medical screening procedures of the U.S. military more robust. Congressman Luttrell serves on the House Armed Services Committee which has oversight over how the U.S. military conducts its medical screening processes. In this role, Congressman Luttrell is moving forward with a potential provision to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 to require the Department of Defense to report on possible shortfalls and areas of improvement in the Department of Defense medical screening process for active and incoming service members.

“Through an NDAA submission, I’m working to increase understanding and transparency for the routine medical screening and treatment of our servicemembers,” said Congressman Morgan Luttrell. “As a veteran myself, I am forever grateful to all those who serve and sacrifice for our country, and I will continue to work to improve the lives of our service members.”

A statement from Senator Ted Cruz: “We owe our fallen servicemen and women a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay. Whenever a member of our military dies here at home, we must evaluate and determine the cause to make sure it doesn’t happen again. And for our servicemembers who have died, we owe their families transparency, to give them the answers they deserve. I stand with the families who are working to improve transparency and am committed to ensuring accountability.”

Ms. Taylor is represented by Texas State Senator Brandon Creighton who supports the event. “It is unacceptable that there are hundreds of names of deceased service members for Margie Taylor to read aloud at Fort Cavazos, formerly Fort Hood, including her own son, Joey Lenz”, said Senator Creighton. “Margie has my full faith and support in her endeavor to find justice for Joey”.

Howard Wood represents the City of Conroe as a City Councilman and as a Veteran of the Unites States Marines. He represents Margie on the local level with unwavering support. “Out of honor and respect, Margie Taylor will read aloud the names of deceased service members who died non-combat deaths at what is now Fort Cavazos. I fully understand mission accomplishment but protecting our service members is an absolute must!”
