CONROE, TX -- Lone Star College – Montgomery Department of Theatre brings to life the waves of emotions through a visual play that explores the life of a teen girl on the autism spectrum who is navigating her way through life.

We Live by the Sea performances began July 6, 2023, at 7 p.m. on campus in the Mainstage Theatre, Building D.

We Live by the Sea is a wonderful play that has been skillfully brought to life by numerous theater groups around the world. This play introduces its audience to an unconventional and loving family consisting of two teenage sisters, Katy, and Hannah. Katy lives with her sister Hannah and her imaginary emotional support dog, Paul Williams, in a quiet English coastal town. Katy frequently endures ostracism from the children at her school because of her differences, which leaves her lonely and longing for a friend. When Ryan, a lonely teenager, moves to their town from London, he and Katy form a bond that is organically revealed throughout the show.

Based on the original creation by the London-based producing company Patch of Blue, this play takes its audience on a journey into the world of autism: not only what it’s like to live with, but what it’s like to fall in love with. Through this thought-provoking story, themes of love, friendship, and the power of imagination shed light on the importance of empathy, understanding, and acceptance.

Chase Waites, a theatre professor at Lone Star College-Montgomery, skillfully directed the compelling play We Live by the Sea. He carefully chose actors who possessed the emotional depth necessary to effectively convey the story and authentically portray individuals with autism. Reflecting on his experience of directing this remarkable play, he cherishes the opportunity to bring this captivating narrative to life.

“Working on We Live by the Sea has been such a joyful experience. It offers a perspective of neurodiversity in a way that is heartbreaking, humorous, and hopeful. The cast, musicians, and crew have tackled this material with great heart and care. This show holds great personal significance for me, as it resonates with the neurodiversity, I encounter both as a professor and a parent,' expressed Chase Waites, Director and Professor at LSC-M.

“In addition to our talented cast, the show offers live music and video as additional tools to glimpse into the mind of the neurodiverse. I am so proud of what our students have created with this production. It has reached a level that is certainly beyond the ordinary,” adds Waites.

Lone Star College-Montgomery Theatre Department's decision to host summer performances of We Live by the Sea continues to emphasize the commitment and dedication to providing quality theatrical experiences for various audiences. It is a fantastic opportunity for talented actors and crew members to showcase their skills and bring this compelling story to life on stage.
