CONROE, TX -- The Lone Star College-Montgomery Student Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors (TSPS) hosted a successful Land Surveying and Mapping Technology event on Friday, September 29, 2023, bringing together a diverse group of professionals, industry partners, and students for LSC-Montgomery’s first ever “An Evening with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.”

Among the distinguished guests were representatives from the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, including Rick Strong, P.E., Director of Licensing and Registration, and Ed Brannan, P.E., Technical Review Professional Engineering. The guest speakers shared legislative updates and pathways to becoming a Surveyor-In-Training (SIT) and Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) in the state of Texas.

The event provided a platform for students to connect with professionals and industry experts while gaining an understanding of the latest surveying rules affecting professional licensure in Texas. In a question-and-answer section of the event, attendees were able to ask the Texas Board specific questions related to becoming an SIT or RPLS in the growing geospatial technology driven industry.

"The event was a great success, and we are grateful for the support of our sponsors and partners who made it all possible," said Professor Adam Salazar III, Program Director of the Land Surveying and Mapping Technology program at LSC-Montgomery. “Thank you to all the industry professionals who attended and shared their valuable insights with our students. We look forward to providing more opportunities to connect students with potential employers, state regulators and promoting the importance of geomatics engineering, land surveying and mapping."

Rick Strong shared that the board looks forward to coming again to LSC-Montgomery and hopes to make their visit an annual event. The Lone Star College-Montgomery Student Chapter of Texas Society of Professional Land Surveyors will build on this success and continue to create opportunities for collaboration between students and industry professionals.

The evening also featured notable guests including Samuel Shumaker, Program Director of Land Surveying and Geospatial Technology at Dallas College; Raymond Amador, Military Program Manager at SAM Inc.; Joel Hillar, Survey Director at STV Engineering; Rudy Meneses, Owner of Surveying Equipment Specialists Inc.; Paul Kwan, President and CEO of Landtech; and, former LSC-Montgomery, Program Director, Nico Marina Torres, from Mott McDonald.
