HOUSTON, TX -- The greater Houston area came together to celebrate the hard work and dedication of student-athletes during Wednesday’s award ceremony hosted by The Touchdown Club of Houston.

A final list of players was chosen by the presiding board for the awards that were given out, including the offensive and defensive players of the year and the coach of the year.

Within the list were a handful of players from The Woodlands area and the surrounding district of 13-6A.

In contention for the Offensive Player of the Year were College Park’s Connor Dunphy and The Woodlands’ Mabrey Mettauer. Both young men were accomplished in their positions of wide receiver and quarterback, respectively, with Mettauer setting career highs for passing touchdowns, completions, and yards for the Highlander program.

Dunphy was noted for his big play ability as the top receiver for the Cavaliers under first-year Head Coach Kyle Coats. Steady play from Dunphy, despite changes at quarterback, has elevated the young man into a promising prospect going into the collegiate level.

Unfortunately for both players, their nominations ended as finalists. The ultimate winner of the Offensive Player of the Year went to Cy-Fair’s quarterback, Trey Owens, who will attend Texas in the coming season.

Also up for nomination for Defensive Player of the Year was Justin Williams out of Oak Ridge. The sensational linebacker and future Georgia Bulldog terrorized opposing offenses during the 2023 season and made a name for himself as the best defensive threat in 13-6A.

Similarly to his district colleagues, Williams was not chosen for his respective award. Instead, the award went to North Shore’s Dillon Dixon. The Mustang spent the season imposing his will against top-caliber talent in the North Houston area and will likely attend Lamar Univeristy.

Even though the awards did not end up in the hands of 13-6A’s players, congratulations should be equally shared by the talented finalists of Dunphy, Mettauer, and Williams.
