THE WOODLANDS, TX – It appears as if the weather patterns this week are decidedly undecided. No two days will be alike as we glide through the first week of the new year.

It seems like the weather this week won’t be able to make up its mind

The year thus far has been pretty temperate and moderate. That’s about to change early this Tuesday afternoon, when the heavens open and we’ll get nearly an inch of rain dumped on us in just a couple of hours’ time. Right as the precipitation begins falling in earnest, the temperature will also pivot from its high of 58 and pretty swiftly find its way back into the 40s. It’s rare that any weather forecaster – especially a hyper-local one like the Woodlands Online Weather Team – can say anything with certainty, but we’re confident this morning in asserting that there is a 100 percent chance someone here is going to get wet.

The rains will continue to a lesser extent throughout the rest of the evening, finally settling down to a few drops in the middle of the night. The clouds will remain, however, blotting out most of the stars and the two-thirds full moon.

As we stagger into Wednesday morning, we’ll still be under cloudy skies and smaller chances of lingering rain, but we’ll get up to 53 for the high in the mid-afternoon, right as the clouds meander away and the sun peeks out. Without the blanket of the clouds, the temperature will start dropping pretty rapidly throughout the afternoon and evening and settle down about five degrees above freezing for the low.

With cold rains on Tuesday and cool and cloudy on Wednesday, the pattern will shift again on Thursday as we wake up to sunny skies with nary a cloud overhead and a sudden temperature increase into the low 60s for a high. Even the winds will play nice and it will feel like an early spring day. However, as we get later into the night, the clouds will come back, and you can expect some rain spatter to begin just before midnight.

Going into Friday, we’ll see a steady increase in the rains that will hit practically everyone, dumping about two-thirds of an inch into the ground that is just getting over the near-inch that came with Tuesday’s downpours. We’ll remain in the mid 50s for a high today. The wet stuff will last most of the day and evening to some extent, and the clouds won’t begin to dissipate to 50 percent coverage until well past bedtime, as the low gets down into the low 40s.

We may have a grey-but-dry weekend, but prepare for a day of warmth and rain early next week as the 2024 weather patterns try to figure out exactly what they are.

Stay tuned to Woodlands Online for our Weekend Weather report coming on Friday…
