THE WOODLANDS, TX – Today much of Montgomery County celebrates Juneteenth, a shortened version of ‘June 19th,’ which commemorates the 1865 anniversary of federal troops arriving in Galveston to enforce the freedom of enslaved people nearly three years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law in 2021, making this a federal holiday, the first since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.

Here in The Woodlands and Montgomery County, there are some closings and alternate hours in reflection of the holiday, including:

  • Banks – Most local branches of your bank are closed today for lobby and drive-through services.
  • Mail Services – While post offices are closed for delivery and in-person lobby services today (with the exception of holiday Priority Mail deliveries), patrons can still purchase stamps and check their post office boxes at most locations. Most third-party mail service providers – such as UPS and FedEx – are open and operating at normal hours
  • Grocery Stores – It appears that all local chain grocery stores – including H-E-B and Kroger – are open and operating at their usual hours. Some independent neighborhood stores might be closed.
  • Schools – Summer sessions may be in full swing for some, but not today; all campuses of local school districts and private schools offering summer classes are closed today.
  • City Offices – most (if not all) municipal offices are closed today, with emergency services still in effect.

Woodlands Online encourages you to check via phone call or online visit before venturing out for an errand that may require a business that may or may not be open today. All businesses closed today will resume operations tomorrow for their usual hours and services.
