THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office has been recognized by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Law Enforcement Division as the 2025 Prosecutor of the Year. This award honors the office’s commitment to prosecuting cases that protect Texas’ natural resources and citizens, as well as its dedication to working alongside Texas Game Wardens.

District Attorney Brett Ligon has long prioritized strong partnerships with law enforcement agencies across Texas and beyond. This past spring, he and Chief Prosecutor Michael Ghutzman were honored to present at the National Undercover Wildlife Officers Association conference in Corpus Christi. Their presentation, Legal Considerations in Undercover Wildlife Investigations, focused on equipping Game Wardens from across the nation with practical legal strategies to further strengthen public safety and safeguard the nation’s natural resources.

“Our partnership with Texas Parks & Wildlife is built on trust, collaboration, and a shared mission of justice,” said District Attorney Brett Ligon. “This award is not just recognition of our office, but of the men and women who protect our land, water, and wildlife every single day. It is a privilege to stand beside them in the fight to protect Texas’ natural resources.”

Chief Prosecutor Michael Ghutzman added, “Speaking to Game Wardens from across the nation was an honor. These cases are unique and often complex, requiring careful planning and precise execution. By sharing legal strategies directly with the officers conducting these investigations, we strengthen their ability to build solid cases and ensure justice is carried out in court.”

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department praised the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office for its leadership and dedication, noting its steadfast commitment to ensuring justice and its consistent support of Game Wardens throughout the state.

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office is committed to seeking justice and ensuring public safety through fair and ethical prosecution, innovative partnerships, and unwavering support of law enforcement agencies.

The award will be formally presented at the Texas Parks and Wildlife annual ceremony in Austin on October 23, 2025.

[Editor's Note: Brett Ligon recently resigned so as to campaign for the State Senate seat recently held by Brandon Creighton. First Assistant DA Mike Holley was recently named interim DA.]
