THE WOODLANDS, TX -- At its annual gathering of supporters, The Champion Project unveiled an ambitious goal: to reach and empower more than 3,000 youth living in congregate care homes across Texas by 2031.

Founded in 2019 and based in The Woodlands, The Champion Project is a trauma-informed nonprofit dedicated to improving outcomes for children in congregate care foster care facilites through consistent, one-on-one mentoring and academic tutoring. To date, the organization has served approximately 800 foster youth between the ages of 4 and 19.

“67% of youth that “age-out” of foster care without being adopted, will be homeless, in jail or dead within 1-year. Girls in foster care are 600% more likely to be pregnant by the age of 21 than their peers and 70% of those babies will go back into the foster care system,” said Elizabeth Chappell, Co-Founder of The Champion Project. “By reaching these children early and building confidence through academic success, we can change the trajectory of their lives.”

Students in the program typically lag four grade levels behind in reading and math. The Champion Project’s strategic growth plan includes expanding services to all 3,000 + foster youth living in congregate care homes across the state of Texas by 2036, ensuring that every child has access to the support they need to thrive.
