MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- Volunteering and giving back to the community is something people learn from their families and their communities. Montgomery County families are known for their generosity and commitment to their community, neighbors, and the future of the county. The Montgomery County Community Foundation (MCCF) created the Legacy of Caring Award in 2023 to honor families in Montgomery County who have demonstrated multigenerational philanthropic action and volunteerism.

The Metcalf family was the inaugural family to be awarded the Legacy of Caring Award for their contributions to the greater good of Montgomery County at MCCF’s 2023 Wine Dinner. Mary Ann Madeley Metcalf’s family has been in Montgomery County since the 1830s and Tommy Metcalf’s family moved to Conroe in 1937. Over many generations, members of the family have always been involved in the community. The various families in the community knew each other and worked together to get things done to improve life in the community, including Tommy’s mother, Barbara Metcalf, who was a member of the Assistance League of Montgomery County.

Privately, Tommy and Mary Ann Metcalf have been very generous to organizations that have meaning to them within Montgomery County. It has always been important to both Mary Ann and Tommy to build a culture within their family of giving their time, talent, and treasure to benefit the community. Tommy was Mayor of Conroe from 2004 to 2008, using his business knowledge to move the city from a financial deficit to a surplus. He was also a member of the Lake Conroe Rotary Club and the Conroe Rotary Club where he was a past president. Mary Ann Madeley Metcalf has been active in schools her children attended, Conroe Service League, as well as a supporter of local non-profits and arts organizations.

They have certainly passed their passion for community service to their children. Son Will Metcalf is the State Representative for the greater Conroe Area. Daughters Rachel Anderson and Emily Cook focus on the schools their children attend and the booster clubs that support their children’s interests, as well as serving on other local boards. Even their children can be seen volunteering in community projects through their school and church. The entire Metcalf family have been active in the Montgomery County Fair Association where the grandkids are even involved.

Building a sense of philanthropic legacy takes time and commitment. One of the strategies the Metcalfs have employed is to rotate who selects the nonprofits to benefit from the Metcalf Family Fund at Montgomery County Community Foundation. That allows everyone to support what they are most enthusiastic about and consider what their legacy should look like in Montgomery County. Their interests range from helping those most vulnerable, such as abused or neglected children who have been removed from their parents or have hearing deficits, to education, and the arts. Tommy created funds that directly benefit specific groups in the area, including the Assistance League of Montgomery County, Conroe Live, First Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, and the Oscar Johnson, Jr. Community Center Volunteer Board.

The Metcalf Family have quietly established a presence and commitment to their community through their legacy of caring. Montgomery County Community Foundation was honored to recognize the Metcalf Family’s legacy in our community to kick off our Legacy of Caring Award in 2023!
