THE WOODLANDS, TX -- At approximately 1:06 a.m. on Friday, The Woodlands Fire Department (TWFD) was dispatched to assist the Timber Lakes Volunteer Fire Department with a reported structure fire at 1625 Sawdust Road.

Upon arrival, Engine 103 reported heavy fire conditions at the scene. The structure involved was an abandoned building, previously used as a pet boarding facility. Battalion 101 assumed command and declared the incident a defensive fire, due to the advanced nature of the blaze.

Firefighters deployed master streams and ground monitors, attacking the fire from the exterior of the structure. Early in the firefighting operation, a partial collapse of the building occurred. A second alarm was requested, ultimately bringing a response of approximately 20 fire apparatus and more than 50 firefighters to the scene.

The fire was declared under control shortly after 2:00 a.m., and the majority of responding units were released. Crews from Timber Lakes VFD and TWFD remain on scene conducting overhaul operations and extinguishing hot spots.

Agencies assisting with the response included South Montgomery County Fire Department, Spring Fire Department, Needham Fire & Rescue / Montgomery County ESD #4, Porter Fire Department, Caney Creek Fire Department, Montgomery County Hospital District, and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The structure sustained heavy damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office.
There were no reported injuries.
